Vacation: Part 3

Our power FINALLY came back on!! After staying in two different hotels in two consecutive nights, things were beginning to get a little frustrating. However, not having a hotel with electricity has pushed us to see as much of Oklahoma City as possible. In two days, we’ve watched LOTS of softball (the reason we’re here in the first place), eaten disgustingly well, gone to the Capitol, visited a science museum, and wandered around Bricktown.

Sunday in between softball sessions, we traveled about 15 miles to Arcadia, OK. We had heard that we should eat a Pop’s because the atmosphere was incredible,  but honestly we still weren’t prepared. We actually passed Pop’s the first time because we thought the Jetsons-looking place with a huge Coke bottle out front couldn’t possibly be the 50’s diner we were expecting. Pop’s (named for soda pop) was architecturally astounding. With an asymmetrical building face and beams jutting across the parking lot, I was a bit confused how it was even standing. IMG_20130602_171236Pop’s serves as a gas station, convenience store, and incredible burger joint. All of the walls are glass with rows and rows of different types of sodas. On top of a cool view, they served us with one of the best burgers I’ve ever had (forgot the name, but it had cheddar cheese, smoked applewood bacon, fried jalapeños, fried onions, and bbq sauce) and a cookies-n-cream shake for dessert. I was quite uncomfortable for a while after that meal!

The next morning we wandered around Bricktown. Bricktown is in downtown Oklahoma City. The OKC Thunder and the OKC minor league baseball team play there, so it is the place to be before and after games. It’s full of restaurants, shops, and bars. We ate at the Spaghetti Warehouse, and browsed several shops.

Not knowing what to do after Bricktown, we noticed that the Capital was only 3-4 miles away. To say we conquered the Capitol was an understatement. The trip began with my mom unashamedly parking in a Senator’s parking spot. Then, the door to the Supreme Court just so happened to be open. I pretended I was Elle Woods winning the case. Then, we met a sweet lady who just so happened to be the Speaker of the House’s assistant. She took us through the Legislator’s Only entrance to the House, which was really cool. She even took us behind the scenes where we met the security guards.

IMG_20130603_173355We finished off our site seeing with a trip to the science museum. I’m more of a words girl- science isn’t my thing- but I had fun pretending to be an astronaut, forensic scientist, and campus cop. They had segways that you could drive around and take through an obstacle course. That was obviously our first stop!

IMG_20130602_132839We finished off our day watching softball at the Women’s College World Series. Our seats are technically in left field, but every game we have somehow scored tickets right behind the plate. I attribute this to Pam Robinson Luck.
